AT&T launched its second trial in Austin, Texas, using millimeter wave (mmWave) technology to deliver a 5G network experience to more locations in the city, reports Telecompaper on July 14, 2017. The launch of 5G in Austin is a major step on its journey to deliver 5G speeds as early as late 2018, the operator said.
AT&T completed in 2016 the industry’s first fixed wireless 5G business customer trial in Austin. This second trial delivers a broadband internet connection to residential, small business and enterprise locations using Ericsson’s 5G RAN and the Intel 5G Mobile Trial Platform. The trial participants can stream premium live TV via DirecTV Now and experience faster broadband services, all over a fixed wireless 5G signal, the company said. The trial benefits from the resources and capabilities of AT&T's 5G testbeds in Austin.
AT&T expects that the trial will provide speeds of up to 1 Gbps using mmWave spectrum. It said it reached a key milestone earlier in 2017 by delivering DirecTV Now using mmWave technology at its Middletown, New Jersey lab. It was the first time DirecTV Now had been delivered over a 5G connection, AT&T said.
